Hormonal Contraceptive Use Among Adolescent Girls in Germany in Relation to Health Behavior and Biological Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Abstract: RESULTSHC users were more likely than nonusers to combine several behavior-related health risks, independent of sociodemographic factors. In particular, HC use was strongly associated with current smoking (odds ratio: 3.4, 95% confidence interval: 2.7-4.3). HC use and behavioral factors showed an additive effect on biological cardiovascular risk factors, explaining between 6% and 30% of the population variance. Relative contributions of HC use ranged from <1% for systolic and diastolic blood pressure to 12% fo… Show more

“…The results of the present study indicate that HDL function is influenced by oral contraceptives in a similar manner, as there was no difference in HDL function between males and females without oral contraceptives. A large study of German adolescents has shown a correlation between oral contraceptives and an unfavorable CVD risk factor profile [27]. They found increased levels of both CRP and HDL in users of oral contraceptives, which is in line with a recent study of adult women [28].…”

“…We observed a higher prevalence of HC use among the most advantaged social classes and among women with smoking history, and we observed a lower prevalence of HC use among obese women, in agreement with previous literature. [15][16][17][18] Our rate of ever use of HT (9.8%) falls within the ranges of two other Spanish surveys conducted among women attending breast cancer screening programs (prevalence of 5.2% and 12.0%). 8,9 A cross-sectional telephone survey in 2002 observed that 22.3% of women aged 45 to 65 years had ever been prescribed HT, using a sample from the reference population of a primary healthcare center.…”

“…It is possible that withdrawal from the use of OCs can lower DBP. Indeed when this was tested in 171 women on OCs for 6 months, both the DBP and SBP declined by 10.4 mmHg and 15.1 mmHg, respectively18 However, the association between HC use and CV risk factors among 2,285 young German girls aged 13–17 years gave relative contributions of HC use to be <1% for SBP and DBP 19. Other age-related factors may be involved in BP increase.…”
