Hormonal and molecular characterization of calcium oxalate stone formers predicting occurrence and recurrence

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the role of sex hormones, androgen receptors (ARs) and mi-RNA/CSF-1 in occurrence and recurrence of calcium oxalate (CaOx) renal urolithiasis. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, 74 patients with CaOx stones; stone formers group (SFG) and 40 healthy subjects; control group were compared. SFG includes both denovo and recurrent cases. Steroid sex hormone plasma assay including testosterone, free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol, and sex hormone binding globulin w… Show more

“…One examination method that is often used for urine examination is by using microscopic methods. Microscopic examination of urine requires a sample that matches the needs of the examination (Elshal et al, 2023). The factors that affect urine results are time, temperature, storage container.…”

“…1,10 Contrary to our findings, female predominance has been reported by Koirala et al 11 A new trend with more female involvement has been noted over near past that may be attributed to change in lifestyle. 12,13 Out of 100 samples, bacterial growth on culture was obtained from the urine samples of 46 patients. Worldwide, varied prevalence both higher and lower has been reported.…”

“…Worldwide, varied prevalence both higher and lower has been reported. [10][11][12][13] This variation is because of different antibiotic prescription patterns in various countries, and varying susceptibility toward antibiotics in different population. The most common isolated organisms were E. coli, Klebsiella sp., followed by others such Proteus sp., Enterococcus sp., Staphylococcus sp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.…”

“…Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stone, accounting for up to 75% of all kidney stones formed. Oxalate is a natural substance found in many foods, and when there is too much oxalate in the urine, crystals can form and stick together to form a solid mass (3).…”
