Hormetic Effects of Bioactive Compounds from Foods, Beverages, and Food Dressing: The Potential Role in Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a damage or trauma to the spinal cord resulting in a total or partial loss of motor and sensory function. SCI is characterized by a disequilibrium between the production of reactive oxygen species and the levels of antioxidant defences, causing oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. This review is aimed at highlighting the hormetic effects of some compounds from foods, beverages, and food dressing that are able to reduce oxidative stress in patients with SCI. Although curcumin, gin… Show more

“…Konsumsi sayur mayur dianggap penting dan terjangkau hal tersebut merupakan sumber mikronutrien dan khususnya serat makanan. Dalam sebuah studi oleh (Fedullo et al, 2021), sayuran berdaun hijau ditemukan memiliki potensi yang baik sebagai suplemen alami zat besi dan beta-karotin yang lebih tinggi. Sayuran juga diketahui dapat mengurangi beban penyakit kronis (Piyathilake et al, 2021).…”

“…Phytomolecules from herbal products, as well as bioactive phytochemicals from plant foods and food dressings, have potential health effects [1][2][3][4]. However, it is known that herbal products and nutraceuticals could affect drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters [5,6].…”

“…Moreover, in special populations, such as individuals with a spinal cord injury [3,4,7] the evaluation of risk for potential food or nutraceutical interactions with drugs should be monitored also considering the sedentary habit imposed by their condition [7]. Many bioactive compounds have non-linear dose-response effects, acting in the context of the hormetic-based lifestyle medicine [8].…”

“…These hormetic influences trigger biochemical processes that translate eustress into an activation of cellular defense signaling pathways that prove beneficial. 20 But does this well-accepted phenomenon apply to dietary antioxidants as well? A hormetic response means that this benefit is dose-dependent, too much of a stressor such as the restriction of eating at the heart of intermittent fasting will not have a beneficial but rather a detrimental impact.…”
