Horizontal logistics collaboration is characterized by the highly professional cooperation of logistics service providers at the same level of the supply chain, which is an effective way to optimize the development and sustainability of modern logistics. Conducting a coding analysis of data from 41 in-depth interviews, this study constructs a theoretical framework of the driving force of horizontal logistics collaboration among Chinese logistics service providers to synchronously improve service, market, efficiency, and emergency competitiveness through cooperation with peer competitors to enhance sustainable comprehensive competitiveness. The four driving forces encourage logistics service providers to adjust their thoughts in the planning stage, change their behavior in the implementation stage, and transform their strategy in the evaluation stage. The results also indicate differences between China and other countries in the driving force, effective utilization of logistics workers, cross-institutional collaboration of state-owned enterprises, and integration of artificial intelligence technology. Finally, we propose relevant recommendations for managers.

PurposeThis article aims to investigate collaborative procurement as a sourcing strategy amongst competing small enterprises in an effort to reduce their material supply costs through increased efficiencies, bargaining power and economies of scale.Design/methodology/approachA case study approach is applied to a network of breweries that are regionally clustered. Interview data from producers, suppliers and industry experts is inductively interpreted to understand the viability, organisational impact and benefits/limitations of joint procurement activities.FindingsThe craft brewing industry follows a market place strategy of differentiation to achieve competitive advantage. This has supply chain implications that promote raw material diversity, which is in conflict with standardisation – a necessary factor for collective buying. Competition impacts information sharing and governance mechanism, while the structural factors of size asymmetry along and across the supply chain influence returns. These issues impact the potential economic benefits of collaborative procurement.Research limitations/implicationsThe research propositions have been developed in a specific industry but are generalisable to other companies with a differentiation strategy, especially in the consumer packaged goods sector.Practical implicationsEnabling conditions and constraints are captured in a framework and capability matrix, which can be used by practitioners to assess industry and product feasibility for collaborative procurement.Originality/valuePrevious studies of collaborative procurement have been in the public sector amongst large organisations. This work focusses on coopetition in the context of small businesses to identify the viability and cost-benefit of this strategy.

The primary goal of this case study is to understand the complexities of organizational culture, and the role that culture plays in using and in implementing collaboration technologies. Culture is defined by E. H. Schein as “a pattern of shared basic assumptions learned by a group as it solved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration.” The levels and types of cultures present in all organizations are explored. Collaboration is defined as the act of working together with other people or organizations to create or achieve something. Collaboration exists in all organizations in some form, structured or unstructured, formal or informal. Organizations often fail to consider existing collaboration practices when introducing new technologies. This research takes the form of a case study of a large international development organization. The case study describes the initial successful adoption of collaboration technologies in the late 1990s and considers the reasons for that success. The case study follows the organization through the next generation of collaboration technologies, and highlights how and why the original successes were lost. Ten common points of failure experienced by organizations are described. The case study suggests that success is unlikely where collaboration technologies are not aligned with existing collaboration models and where the culture of the organization is not collaboration oriented. Perspectives and experiences are shared in the hope that others can learn from these successes and failures.
