Hopelessness: A Network Analysis

Abstract: Hopelessness is a complex phenomenon with important clinical consequences, such as depression and suicidality. Despite its major impact on mental health, little is known about the structure of hopelessness. In this study, hopelessness was investigated in a large community sample (n = 1985), recruited to be highly representative of general population in Germany. In the context of network analysis, state-of-the-art techniques were adopted (i) to investigate which thoughts and beliefs (nodes) are the most central… Show more

“…Currently, there is no consensus as to how to deal with missing data in network analysis, with different methods being adopted (Bastiaanse et al, 2020 ). In order to take a cautious approach and in line with extant literature (Beard et al, 2016 ; Marchetti, 2019 ), we applied listwise deletion of missing data. However, we also checked the trustworthiness of our results, after imputing missing data via multivariate imputation by chained equations (MICE), as previously done (e.g., Levinson et al, 2018 ; Southward & Cheavens, 2018 ).…”

“…Hopelessness can be defined as the negative expectations about future situations and events which could involve the self and the others (14). People who have these negative expectations think they cannot solve their problems, they never reach their goals (14), and that there will be more negative than positive times in their future (15). Beck considers hopelessness as the third component of his cognitive negative triad of depression which already involves the self and the world/environment (16,17).…”

“…First of all, the level of item informativeness was checked (Mullarkey et al, 2018(Mullarkey et al, , 2019Marchetti, 2019). Each item was compared to the mean level of informativeness of the CPI-HP (0.078) plus/minus 2.5SDs (0.194).…”
