HOP3 a new regulator of the ER stress response in Arabidopsis with possible implications in plant development and response to biotic and abiotic stresses

Abstract: HOPs (heat shock protein 70 (HSP70)-heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) organizing proteins) are a highly conserved family of cytosolic cochaperones. In a recent study we showed that HOP3, a member of the HOP family in Arabidopsis, plays an essential role during endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in plants. Interestingly, we also demonstrated that AtHOP3 interacts with binding immunoglobulin protein (BiP), a major ER-resident chaperone. All these data suggest that HOP3 could assist BiP in protein folding in the ER. T… Show more

“…The application of acetic acid increased the expression of various stress response and stress tolerance-related genes, such as heat shock family proteins, HSP20 (Muthusamy et al, 2017), HSP21 (Zhong et al, 2013), HSP70 (Tang et al, 2016; Leng et al, 2017) and HSP90 (Krishna and Gloor, 2001), ER stress-related gene, HOP3 (At4g12400; Fernández-Bautista et al, 2017a,b), catalase 1 and catalase 2 (Zou et al, 2015), multiprotein-bridging factor 1c gene ( MBF1c ; Alavilli et al, 2017), and an outer membrane tryptophan-rich sensory protein (TSPO) (Guillaumot et al, 2009). HSP20 and HSP70 family members function as molecular chaperones and help plants adapt to environmental stress (Tang et al, 2016; Leng et al, 2017; Muthusamy et al, 2017).…”

“…HSP21 is involved in the protection against oxidative stress (Zhong et al, 2013). HOP3, a member of the HOPs [heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) organizing proteins] family in Arabidopsis plays an essential role in the response of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in plants to abiotic stress (Fernández-Bautista et al, 2017a). HOP3 has been suggested, through its role in the alleviation of ER stress, to play an important function in plant response to various stresses (Fernández-Bautista et al, 2017a).…”

“…HSPs (e.g., HSP90) maintain the tridimensional integrity of proteins including membrane and cytosolic receptors and transductors of pathogenic signals (e.g., RPM1), ( Hubert et al., 2003 ; Park et al., 2015 ). Complexes including cochaperones (HOP3) and HPS70 and HSP90 may be key to allowing correct protein folding in the ER during periods of high abiotic or biotic stress ( Fernández-Bautista et al., 2017 ). The activation of these genes in the moderately resistant genotype (‘Laurentian’) is notable since, to our knowledge, there are only two reports of regulation of HSPs in this pathosystem ( Zhao et al., 2017 ; Luo et al., 2018 ).…”

“…During these processes, the demand for folding of these membrane and secreted proteins overcomes the basal folding capacity of the ER, prompting the so-called ER stress (Deng et al, 2013;Liu and Howell, 2016). In this regard, the involvement of AtHOP3 in the alleviation of the ER opens the possibility that HOP3 may also participate in processes that course with an intrinsic ER stress (Fernandez-Bautista et al, 2017b). As it seems to be the case of pollen germination in Arabidopsis (Fernandez-Bautista et al, 2017a).…”
