Honorificity

Abstract

This is a survey entry on grammatical devices encoding Honorificity. Rather than presenting a particular theory or an analysis, this entry synthesizes the research that has been done on Honorificity, and explores specific empirical data sets worthy of attention from researchers working on morphology and morphosyntax in general. With this goal in mind, this entry is organized according to the positions of such grammatical devices. Section 2 examines Honorificity in and around the nominal domain, such as pronouns, common nouns and other nominal derivational morphologies. Section 3 explores the Honorificity expressed in and around the verbal domain, such as subject and object honorifics. Finally, Section 4 investigates Honorificity found in the clause periphery, such as addressee honorifics, and other discourse‐oriented expressions.
