Honeybee genetics shape the strain-level structure of gut microbiota in social transmission

Abstract: Honeybee gut microbiota transmitted via social interactions are beneficial to the host health. Although the microbial community is relatively stable, individual variations and high strain-level diversity have been detected across honeybees. Although the bee gut microbiota structure is influenced by environmental factors, the heritability of the gut members and the contribution of the host genetics remains elusive. Considering bees within a colony are not readily genetically identical due to the polyandry of qu… Show more

“…6C ). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that both the orthologs of SLPs unique to W8172 were closely related to those from another strain (M0390) from L. apis isolated in honeybee gut ( 35 ). Moreover, they fell into the same radiation with the orthologs from Lactobacillus crispatus , whose SlpA is involved in the adherence to gut epithelia and potential host immune regulation ( 36 ).…”

“…Despite the strong variation in the larval stage, the well-described adult core microbiome colonized in all treatments and gene expression differences were limited. In general, the honey bee microbiome shows large variation on bacterial strain level ( 83 ), and recruitment there can be shaped by host genetics ( 84 ). While 16S sequencing has clear limitations when it comes to fine-scale taxonomic identification ( 85 ), the diversity of ASVs identified here verify microdiversity on bacterial strain level.…”
