“…No immunosuppressive medications were given because of previous graft immunosterilization with formaldehyde and thimerosal. 11,20 Postoperative pain was managed with intramuscular injections of buprenorphine hydrochloride, 0.15 mg/kg.…”

“…16,17 Synthetic grafts have been investigated, but these are uniformly unsuccessful be-cause of the problem of infection. 18 Other animal studies [19][20][21] have investigated microvascular grafting, cryopreservation, and homografting after denervation of the spleen. Summarized, the results of these studies show that it is possible to transplant homograft tracheae into pigs, dogs, rabbits, and humans; however, unless the MHC markers are removed, or the recipient is immunosuppressed, rejection will occur.…”

“…Other immunosuppression methods include denervation of the spleen, 47 high dose radiation therapy, 48 photodynamic therapy, 49 medication (Cialit and Merthiolate, 50 and t-octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol 51 ) used in the treatment of reduction of graft antigenicity, or interleukin-10 gene transfer therapy to restrain an immune response of T cells. 52 It is necessary to wait for future reports on the long-term results of those methods.…”

“…Toivio et al (1973) performed allotransplantation of the trachea in adult mongrel dogs and observed lymphocyte aggregation at the site of collapse of tracheal cartilage and perivascular lymphocyte cuffing generally distributed in the subepithelial space. Lane et al (1977) transplanted allogeneic tracheas to the abdominal walls of rats and confirmed the resulting rejection reaction ; normal epithelium of the graft was maintained for several days, mononuclear cells consisting principally of small lymphocytes appeared in the epithelium or perivascular sites in the subepithelial layer 10 to 15 days after surgery, and subsequently, activated lymphocytes and lymphoblasts induced tissue injuries.…”
