This article reviews the zinc(II)-dependent photophysical properties of arylvinylbipyridines (AVBs), a class of fluoroionophores in which 2,2′-bipyridyl and an aryl moiety are electronically conjugated. Zinc(II) binding of an AVB may lead to an emission bathochromic shift of the fluoroionophore without diminishing its fluorescence quantum yield. This observation can be explained using the excited state model of electron donor–π bridge–electron acceptor “push–pull” fluorophores, in which the bipy moiety acts as an electron acceptor, and zinc(II)-coordination strengthens its electron affinity. The spectral sensitivity of bipy-containing fluoroionophores, such as AVBs, to zinc(II) can be exploited to prepare fluorescent indicators for this ion. In several cases, AVB moieties are incorporated in fluorescent heteroditopic ligands, so that the variation of zinc(II) concentration over a relatively large range can be correlated to fluorescence changes in either intensity or color. AVB fluoroionophores are also used to introduce an intramolecular Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) strategy for creating zinc(II) indicators with high photostability and a narrow emission band, two desired characteristics of dyes used in fluorescence microscopy.

Parallel alignment of dipolar electron-donor-π-bridge-electron-acceptor entities can strongly enhance their nonlinear optical properties. This favorable arrangement can be in principle achieved by linking these units covalently or through metal coordination. Four dipolar single-strand chromophores decorated with a 5-electron-donor-5'-electron-acceptor-modified 2,2'-bipyridine functionality were synthesized. For two of these chromophores triple-stranded dendritic structures were successfully formed. All of the compounds were characterized with respect to their linear and nonlinear optical properties. For the aldehyde derivatives an enhancement of the first hyperpolarizability of 4.5 rather than 3 was obtained when going from single to triple strands. Theoretical calculations with density functional theory suggest that interstrand transitions contribute to the optical properties of the dendritic structures.

Methyl and phenyl germanium chlorides (R n GeCl 4-n , n = 1, 2, 3), just like GeCl 4 , form complexes with electroactive bidentate (2,2 ′ -bipyridine) and monodentate (imidazole, pyrimidine and 2,6-dichloro-pyridine) ligands, R n GeCl 4-n ‧ L x (x = 1 or 2 for bi-and monodentate Ls, respectively), which were studied by cyclic voltammetry and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Dative interactions of lone pair of N of these heteroaromatic ligands towards Ge lower the reduction potential E p of such complexes by about 1 V compared to own reduction potential E o of L. Electron transfer to these complexes is reversible, resulting in corresponding anion radicals. Elimination of Cl -anion from these species leads to L-coordinated radicals whose one-electron reduction is also reversible. Real-time, time-dependent EPR spectroelectrochemistry of electrogenerated anion radicals of complexes with 2,2 ′ -bipyridine (bipy) has shown that spin in these species is delocalized on the bipy moiety; nitrogen hfc constants suggest that two N atoms are non-equivalent and occupy different positions in the Ge environment. These findings are supported by DFT calculations.
