Homogenization of Ukrainian air temperature data

Abstract: A database of monthly mean air temperature data collected in Ukraine has been created. The database contains records of 514 stations, which were working at one time or another during the period 1812-2014. Metadata have also been collected using the available descriptions of the stations' histories. Regular observations at a sufficiently large number of stations contained in the database began in the early 1880s. However, due to the disruptions that occurred during World Wars I and II and resulted in a lot of m… Show more

“…Several series do not meet complete and/or continuity requirements or are too short and were not included in the raw series data set. Despite short or discontinuous series are a problem for many networks worldwide (Hunziker et al ., ), these are a valuable source of information for climate analysis, for example for the reconstruction of temperature fields (Osadchyi et al ., ).…”

“…While HOMER (Mestre et al, 2013) is the software officially recommended by the "HOME" COST ACTION, its use is mainly intended for an interactive processing of small-medium size networks with metadata support (Osadchyi et al, 2018). Having to deal with a large number of stations, here two automatic softwares suited for the search and adjustment of abrupt shifts in mean (breakpoints) in large networks were chosen: ACMANT and Climatol.…”

“…The homogeneity of the monthly mean air temperature series collected in Ukraine has been considered in several studies (Osadchyi et al ., ; Osadchyi et al ., ; Skrynyk et al ., ; Osadchyi et al ., ). However, homogenization of Ukrainian extreme, minimum (Tn) and maximum (Tx) temperature data at different timescales (daily, monthly, annual) has not been conducted so far.…”

“…The results presented alongside the results published in Osadchyi et al . () constitute a complete homogeneous database of monthly air temperatures (mean, minimum and maximum) for the territory of Ukraine covering the period of 1946–2015 (1946–2014 for mean temperature). The database, therefore, can be considered as a good basis for regional/national climate studies.…”
