This paper presents an exploratory study of English and Swedish teachers' perspectives on the role of homework in year-one children's learning of number. In order to ensure cultural integrity, data were analysed independently by two colleagues in each context. Analyses yielded three broad but cross-culturally common themes reflecting culturally situated notions of common sense. These concerned the existence of homework, the purpose of homework and the role of parents in homework's completion. While homework was unproblematic for all English teachers, half the Swedish cohort spoke against it, arguing that variation in home background would compromise principles of equity. All teachers who set homework, whether English or Swedish, spoke of homework as a means of supporting children at risk of falling behind their peers, a process by which children practice routine skills. English teachers' homeworkrelated justifications were located in a discourse of target setting that was invisible in the Swedish.

Parents and teachers play an important role in stimulating student motivation. The aim of this study was to examine if both parent and teacher enthusiasm could predict intrinsic motivation toward STEM activities, and if motivation would be associated with improved STEM achievement over one year in a one-year prospective examination of 288 Swedish students in their final year of a Science High School program (143 females and 145 males). Surveys of parent and teacher enthusiasm were collected at baseline, and student intrinsic motivation and GPA in STEM were assessed at baseline and at the end of the year. Baseline GPA and intrinsic motivation as well as follow-up intrinsic motivation were significantly associated with later GPA. Finally, intrinsic motivation mediated the relation between teacher and parent enthusiasm and change in GPA. Findings show the importance of parent and teacher enthusiasm for adolescent's intrinsic motivation and achievement in STEM.

Various advantages and disadvantages of homework are discussed in the literature. The aim of this paper is to determine the advantages and disadvantages of homework practices in Serbian Language taught in junior grades of primary education. Implementation practices were examined from the standpoint of teachers with the aim of determining: the dynamics in assigning and reviewing homework; assessment methods and ways of communicating feedback; representation of different types of homework; and the evaluation of their contribution. The study was conducted in 2020 and 2021 on a sample of 123 teachers. The obtained results indicate that the homework practices in Serbian Language classes are characterized by the frequency and diversity of homework assignments, individualized approach, reviewing regularity, and positive perception of their contribution. However, the results also raise several important questions-excessive student workload, functionality of assessing homework as a learning tool, homework assessments, encouraging cooperative homework and communication related to it-and indicate the need for further research.
