Homeopathy for childhood diarrhea: combined results and metaanalysis from three randomized, controlled clinical trials

Abstract: The results from these studies confirm that individualized homeopathic treatment decreases the duration of acute childhood diarrhea and suggest that larger sample sizes be used in future homeopathic research to ensure adequate statistical power. Homeopathy should be considered for use as an adjunct to oral rehydration for this illness.

Jacobs et al (2003) have run a series of successful trials of individualized prescriptions in the acute setting of childhood diarrhea. Understanding the therapeutic strategy we use along with the choice of condition, whether acute or chronic is essential in trial design.…”

“…The principle of "potencies" states that remedies retain biological activity if they are diluted and agitated or shaken between serial dilutions, even when diluted beyond Avogadro's number, at which no original molecules remain. Even though homoeopathy is one of the most controversial types of alternative medicines, several studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy of homoeopathy in different clinical conditions, reporting positive results as well as the same placebo effect [10][11][12][13].…”

“…ʈ, 90 In addition, meta-analyses and reviews of several specific diagnoses have been carried out. 86,[91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98] Most of these reviews and meta-analyses, with some exceptions, [99][100][101] reached the conclusion that the effects observed in all trials are not compatible with the hypothesis that homeopathy is identical with placebo but that too few trials exist in any single clinical areas to recommend homeopathy clinically. Whether homeopathy is a placebo or not is also dependent on the inclusion and analysis criteria used by a meta-analysis or a review.…”
