Home use of a compact, 12‑lead ECG recording system for newborns

Abstract: Background: An easy-to-operate ECG recorder should be useful for newborn screening for heart conditions, by health care workers --or parents. We developed a one-piece electrode strip and a compact, 12-lead ECG recorder for newborns. Method:We enrolled 2,582 newborns in a trial to assess abilities of parents to record a 12-lead ECG on their infants (2-4 weeks-old). Newborns were randomized to recordings by parents (1,290) or our staff (1,292 controls). Educational backgrounds of parents varied, including 64% wi… Show more

“…Genotyping was performed using the Illumina HumanCNV370-Quadv3 BeadChip at the Medical Genetics Institute at Cedars–Sinai Medical Center (HumanCNV370-Quadv3 BeadChips; Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA). The Hispanic controls from NASH CRN are derived from the Long QT Screening (LQTS) study 124 . Saliva samples were used for genotyping with the Illumina HumanCore-24 BeadChips at the Institute for Translational Genomics and Population Sciences of the Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.…”

“…External replication in a liver biopsy cohort. Available data from the following groups contributed to the liver biopsy cohort: (1) Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network (NASH CRN) studies 20,41,[58][59][60][61][62] Heritability estimates and genetic correlations analysis. LD-score regression was used to estimate the heritability coefficient, and subsequently population and sample prevalence estimates were applied to estimate heritability on the liability scale 68 .…”

“…Though new technology has been developed in the commercial space with application in adult outpatient and emergency clinical settings, the standard 12-lead recording has remained the only standardized acquisition tool across the broad range of pediatric patients including infants, school-aged, and adolescent patients with variable body sizes, levels of development, and abilities to cooperate with tracing acquisition [9][10][11]. Furthermore, there has not been a study performed in pediatrics to assess the minimum number of leads required in ECG acquisition that does not compromise diagnostic accuracy.…”
