Home spirometry: Assessment of patient compliance and satisfaction and its impact on early diagnosis of pulmonary symptoms in post-lung transplantation patients

Abstract: Telemedicine is useful in monitoring patients, and in particular those, such as lung transplant recipients, suffering from chronic illnesses. This prospective cohort study was conducted on 15 lung transplant recipients. “…In some settings, clinicians have used this method to assist in patients' reporting of postoperative symptoms through either an automated telephone survey (45) or via a videophone (47). Other clinicians, however, demonstrate routine monitoring of specific objective clinical data including ileostomy output (55), blood pressure and medication adherence (47), surgical drain output (48), and home spirometry results (46,56). Although not as commonly utilized, there are reports of patients conveying specific postoperative concerns as they arose through automated messaging systems (49,57) and communications based on smartphone digital photography (50).…”

“…1,18 Fadaizadeh et al found that telespirometry in lung transplant recipients was effective, and led to patient satisfaction, compliance, adherence to study and sense of security. 21 In our study, we could not detect improvement in knowledge or adherence due to the small patient numbers, but our impression is that the technique is feasible and acceptable. The patients were willing to meet the staff in their own environment, where they felt safe and comfortable, and opened up more easily.…”
