Home Sleep Tests for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a fairly common condition that, if left untreated, can lead to complications such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Polysomnography (PSG) is the most accurate method for diagnosing OSA, but it is a cumbersome and expensive test. A well-validated, easier to perform and less expensive alternative is the home sleep test (HST). The purpose of this review is to educate the primary care provider about the important differences between PSG and HSTs, the advantages and limitati… Show more

“…Although this is relatively higher than the rate of data loss that has commonly been reported (Kapoor & Greenough, 2015), data losses of up to 33% have been previously reported (Lux, Boehlecke, & Lohr, 2004). Although the prevalence of OSA when ODI 3% ≥ 5 events per hr was used seems high (72%), similar estimates have been previously reported in population-based studies (Senaratna et al, 2017;Tan et al, 2016) that used AASM 2012 scoring criteria (Berry et al, 2012), which uses the same desaturation levels.…”

“…The HST [26,27] is a kind of limited PSG that is made at home (i.e., portable equipment is transported to the patient's home). The number of channels used is often reduced to three: airflow, respiratory effort, and oximetry.…”
