“…Studies of Golden Eagle habitat use have involved both migratory (e.g. Brodeur et al 1996, Alerstam 2001, McIntyre et al 2008, Duerr et al 2012, Johnston et al 2013, Moss et al 2014, Domenech et al 2015 and non-migratory birds (Marzluff et al 1997, Carrete et al 2000, McLeod et al 2002b, Sergio et al 2006, Tapia et al 2007, Sandgren et al 2014, Watson et al 2014, Braham et al 2015, Poessel et al 2016, Miller et al 2017, Tracey et al 2018. Later studies have benefitted from GPS telemetry (L opez-L opez 2016).…”

“…Little is known about the movements of adults in the northern boreal forest in Europe, although a recent study of satellite-tagged adults in northern Sweden has shown that even some adults may leave their territories, especially after failed breeding (Moss et al 2014). Five of the juveniles that were tagged on the coast of Finnmark were found dead at varying distances in the same region within 7 mo after tagging.…”

“…Additionally, when comparing mortality sources and wintering areas between ring-tagged and satellite-tagged juvenile Golden Eagles from Alaska, McIntyre (2012) found differences that could be attributed to an effect of the extra burden of the transmitter (more deaths due to starvation and wintering ranges farther north). A study involving satellite-tagged adult Golden Eagles in Sweden showed indications of possible adverse effects of transmitters (high nesting failure; Moss et al 2014). Our own data do not allow assessment of potential effects, due to few ring recoveries and lack of necropsies.…”

“…The managed forest landscape in boreal Sweden is dynamic, whereby clearcuts, which are favoured hunting habitats for Golden Eagles (Moss et al 2014, Sandgren et al 2014, successively grow into unfavourable thicket forest, while mature forests are harvested to become new eagle hunting grounds. Thus the quality of territories may also change over time.…”
