“…According to Stoufflet and Caillol (1988), in early pregnancy females are hardly receptive to males and this would increase male activity for mating. Similar values have been reported in other lagomorphs such as the cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) (Trent and Rongstad, 1974). In contrast, a marked reduction in activity was observed from April to October, which could be attributed to the changes in environmental conditions and decreased food and water availability, though both requirements were provided ad libitum (Boyd, 1986;Boag, 1992;Eiserman et al, 1993;Ballinger and Morgan, 2002).…”

“…We examined the percentage of pups surviving to 5 months of age as a measure of reproductive success (at 5 months the pups were independent of parental care and recruited into the population). We calculated annual survival rates, using MICROMORT (Heisey and Fuller 1985), for the various cohorts by extrapolating daily survival rates (Trent and Rongstad 1974) using animals of known fate. Dispersal rates were estimated similarly to survival rates but substituting dispersal for death in the calculation (Fuller 1989).…”

“…Lines are given at 0.85 for comparative purposes. Kaplan-Meier and Trent-Rongstad refer to survival calculated following methodologies in Pollock et al (1989) and Trent & Rongstad (1974) respectively. JollySeber estimation is described in Krebs (1989), recatch estimation in , and age ratios in Green and Evans (1940b).…”
