“…However, a ''high score'' phenotype has been shown to be particularly strongly associated with doctordiagnosed asthma [18]; thus our related finding may indicate a role of pollution in new onset of asthma in adults. This interpretation is consistent with our previous finding based on the more traditional definition of ''asthma incidence'', using asthma at follow-up among those free of the disease at baseline [16]. That latter approach is less ambiguous in the interpretation regarding acute and chronic effects as a ''doctor's diagnosis'' does reflect a ''chronic condition'' rather the accumulated acute expression of the disease.…”

“…In that previous work, we used the dichotomised definition of new onset of doctor-diagnosed asthma. An increase of 10 mg?m [16]. The use of the dichotomous definition, however, presented limitations that could be overcome with the score.…”

“…These chemicals are irritating and the authors interpret their results as not being caused by sensitising agents (MedinaRamon et al 2005). Also the relatively low level of ambient irritating air pollution from traffic exhausts in cities in Sweden (Modig et al 2009) and 14 other cities in the European Community (Jacquemin et al 2009) give an excessive risk for asthma.…”

“…The Respiratory Health in Northern Europe study 55 and the European Community Respiratory Living close to high traffic was non-significantly associated with asthma incidence NO 2 was associated with adult asthma incidence only in subjects with a positive SPT Modig et al 55 Cohort in Sweden, including 3,824 adults (age, 15-45), followed-up for 9 years. NO 2 dispersion models and proximity to traffic NO 2 exposure and living close to a major road were associated with asthma onset and incidence in adults Jacquemin et al 56 Prospective cohort, in European 17 cities (ECRHS), including 4,185 adults (age, 20-40) followed up for 10 years. NO 2 dispersion models NO 2 was associated with asthma incidence in adults Kunzli et al 57 Prospective cohort in 8 Swiss areas, including 2,725 adults (age,18-60), followed up for 10 years, traffic-related PM 10 dispersions model Traffic PM 10 is associated with asthma incidence in adult nonsmokers…”
