Aging individuals may face difficulty with independently navigating and interacting with their home environment. Evidence-based interventions promoting home modifications are needed to support aging-in-place across the lifespan. This study identified the facilitators and barriers to implementing home modifications from the perspectives of residents and professionals (N = 16). Guided by a social-ecological model, researchers utilized directed content analysis of focus group interviews. While participants discussed facilitators and barriers mainly on the individual level, factors were presented at the relationship, community, and societal level of the model. Overall, the findings suggest a potential for targeted interventions on all levels of the model to promote adoption of home modifications.

Background. Many occupational therapists make home modification recommendations; however, it is unknown if sustainability considerations (i.e., economic, social, and environmental) are contemplated during this process. Purpose. To understand occupational therapists’ perceptions regarding the sustainability of home modifications. Method. This study adopted a qualitative description approach. Researchers utilized semistructured interviews as the primary means of data collection. Findings. The ten female occupational therapists interviewed had three or more years of experience working with home modifications. The analysis identified three themes: It's not easy being green: environmental sustainability, stretching a dollar: financial inequities, and barriers and benefits in the home modification process. Implications. Findings suggest OTs have a varied and a general understanding of how to implement sustainability concepts in their practice. There is also a need to make access to home modifications more equitable. Further research is needed to build a more robust understanding of how OT recommended home modifications can contribute to sustainability.

This study aimed to develop and implement smart care spaces (SCS) to improve the quality of life and convenience for individuals with significant severe disabilities. By analyzing Korean and international case studies, the study integrated technology, universal design principles, and stakeholder feedback, along with care robots for daily living assistance. Various areas within the SCS address the unique needs of people with severe disabilities. The first SCS was constructed in the Nuri Hall of the National Rehabilitation Center in Korea as a pilot project. Future plans include continuous improvement and utilization of the space based on user experiences, feedback, and results of usability evaluation to reduce the caregiving burden and promote inclusive environments.
