The aim of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the exploitation pattern of the European lobster population in a fully representative small-scale fishery of the Mediterranean (Corsica, France) and to collect initial biological information on this species. Data were collected by scientific observers on board net fishing vessels for eight consecutive years from 2006 until 2013. Average annual catches were estimated at 6.7 t. Length frequencies indicated that exploitation focused on large individuals. Catch per unit of effort varied significantly as a function of month, fishing area and depth. Our approach to catch distribution revealed spatial heterogeneity with large catches in the south area. A fishery-independent survey was performed in 2013 and 2014 in west Cap Corse using 540 lobster traps; it showed an extremely low catch rate, confirming the low abundance for this area. This study provided new biological knowledge of a little-studied species in the Mediterranean.

Genotype Reconstruction of Paternity in European Lobsters (Homarus gammarus)

Decapod crustaceans exhibit considerable variation in fertilisation strategies, ranging from pervasive single paternity to the near-ubiquitous presence of multiple paternity, and such knowledge of mating systems and behaviour are required for the informed management of commercially-exploited marine fisheries. We used genetic markers to assess the paternity of individual broods in the European lobster, Homarus gammarus, a species for which paternity structure is unknown. Using 13 multiplexed microsatellite loci, three of which are newly described in this study, we genotyped 10 eggs from each of 34 females collected from an Atlantic peninsula in the south-western United Kingdom. Single reconstructed paternal genotypes explained all observed progeny genotypes in each of the 34 egg clutches, and each clutch was fertilised by a different male. Simulations indicated that the probability of detecting multiple paternity was in excess of 95% if secondary sires account for at least a quarter of the brood, and in excess of 99% where additional sire success was approximately equal. Our results show that multiple paternal fertilisations are either absent, unusual, or highly skewed in favour of a single male among H. gammarus in this area. Potential mechanisms upholding single paternal fertilisation are discussed, along with the prospective utility of parentage assignments in evaluations of hatchery stocking and other fishery conservation approaches in light of this finding.

American lobster (Homarus americanus) supports one of the most valuable fisheries in the United States. Spatial distributions of H. americanus are hypothesized to be influenced by climate-driven environmental factors, but such effects have not been quantified. We developed a Tweedie generalized additive model (GAM) to quantify environmental effects on season-, sex-, and size-specific distributions of H. americanus in the inshore Gulf of Maine. Tweedie GAMs were coupled with regional circulation model output to predict spatiotemporal changes in distribution of H. americanus due to mesoscale climate variability. GAM results indicated that bottom temperature and salinity impacts on H. americanus distribution were more pronounced during spring. The coupled climate–niche model predicted significantly higher H. americanus abundance under a warm climatology scenario. This study provides a predictive climate–niche modelling framework that may be useful for planning fishery investments and anticipating management challenges given ongoing climate-driven changes in the Northwest Atlantic.
