Holographic dual of the Eguchi-Kawai mechanism

Abstract: The holographic dual of N = 2 * , D = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory has many features common to 5d CFT. We interpret this as a manifestation of Eguchi-Kawai mechanism.

“…More recently, there have been discussions of how extra dimensions can emerge from Coulomb branch flows for large N theories. (See, for example, [46,47].) Thus, we expect that the emergence of the extra dimension in our flow should signal an interesting new strongly-coupled phase of the M2-brane theory in which families of charged, solitonic objects are becoming massless.…”

“…Finally, it would be interesting to generalize our calculations to other string solutions in the Pilch-Warner background [4,33,34], to the string dual of the pure N = 2 theory [35,36], where a remarkable match between localization results for Wilson loops and supergravity has been observed [37], and to backgrounds with N = 1 supersymmetry, such as the Polchinski-Strassler background [38] or its S 4 counterpart [39], albeit in this case no fieldtheory predictions are available yet.…”

“…The rest of the paper will leverage this structure to learn primarily about universal features of gravity, but also to learn about the Eguchi-Kawai mechanism in large-N gauge theories. For some previous work exploring the Eguchi-Kawai mechanism in holography, see [16][17][18][19].…”
