The continuous evolution of video technologies is now primarily focused on enhancing 3D video paradigms and consistently improving their quality, realism, and level of immersion. Both the research community and the industry work towards improving 3D content representation, compression, and transmission. Their collective efforts culminate in the striving for real-time transfer of volumetric data between distant locations, laying the foundation for holographic-type communication (HTC). However, to truly enable a realistic holographic experience, the 3D representation of the HTC participants must accurately convey the real individuals’ appearance, emotions, and interactions by creating authentic and animatable 3D human models. In this regard, our paper aims to examine the most recent and widely acknowledged works in the realm of 3D human body modelling and reconstruction. In addition, we provide insights into the datasets and the 3D parametric body models utilized by the examined approaches, along with the employed evaluation metrics. Our contribution involves organizing the examined techniques, making comparisons based on various criteria, and creating a taxonomy rooted in the nature of the input data. Furthermore, we discuss the assessed approaches concerning different indicators and HTC.

Holographic-type communication (HTC) is on the verge of revolutionizing current communication paradigms. It will seamlessly connect people from distant locations through a fully immersive experience that will engage all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. However, the practical realization and widespread adoption of HTC impose significant demands on current networks and enduser devices. While recent studies have primarily focused on discussing the HTC challenges and potential research directions, this paper takes a further step by evaluating the capabilities of wireless networks to meet HTC requirements. Specifically, it highlights the limitations of the fifth-generation (5G) networks by identifying HTC-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and explores the potential of the sixth-generation (6G) networks. Moreover, it not only proposes potential research approaches for HTC enhancement but also analyzes their impact on the challenges in HTC implementation. Finally, the paper questions the ubiquitous potential of 6G, suggesting that a coordinated approach leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for jointly optimizing user sites and communication networks is the most promising strategy, rather than solely relying on the capabilities of specific network generations.

This essay explores the burgeoning phenomenon of fan-generated content that utilizes generative artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic the voices of deceased or retired popular music artists. This practice can be seen as an extension of Digital Audio Workstations’ (DAWs’) capabilities, potentially leading to the creation of musical pieces that resemble traditional covers and mash-ups. The essay analyzes three representative works in this creative category. Two of them are of a fan nature, exploring imagined alternative paths in the development of popular music, while the third is a parody. As these examples demonstrate, the rise of AI covers raises numerous questions. These include concerns about the nature of human creativity and the potential response of the music industries to this technology’s proliferation.
