Two gravity cores that penetrated Upper Pleistocene to Upper Holocene sediments in the NW Black Sea have been studied lithologically and microfaunally. The investigations have been coupled with isotopic, calcium carbonate and radiocarbon dating. Six ecological intervals have been distinguished based on changes in microfossil assemblages, giving new insights on the sea‐level and paleoenvironmental changes that took place in the last 25 000 a BP. For the Last Glacial Maximum the ostracod community contains a homogeneous brackish assemblage dominated by Candonidae, suggesting a salinity around 5–8‰. The salinity decrease (to 0.5–5‰) that started concomitantly with the first Meltwater Pulse during Heinrich Stadial 1 is mirrored by increasing diversity and abundance of microfaunal assemblages. This microfaunal increase reached maximum values within the Bølling–Allerød warm period. The shift from Loxoconchidae to Candonidae towards the top of the Younger Dryas suggests a slight increase in salinity. The Preboreal warming period is marked by an abundance increase of ostracod assemblages. During the Late Holocene, stable marine conditions set in, reflected by assemblages similar to those of the present‐day. Based on these data, the first marine influx into the Black Sea before 9390 a BP is assumed.

“…It filled to the level of -155 m (Major et al 2006) or -100 m (Yanko-Hombach et al 2007), with an ultimate level controlled by the elevation of the Bosphorus sill that is currently at -35 m. Marine incursion to the Black Sea basin has been hypothesized at either 7.5 ka (Ryan et al 1997) or 9.4 ka (Major et al 2006) and ascribed to the post-glacial rising of the Mediterranean Sea, a hypothesis that is also linked to the biblical story of Noah (Ryan and Pitman III 1998). However, Ivanova et al (2007) studied sediment cores obtained from the Black Sea shelf for understanding Holocene sea-level oscillations and environmental changes and concluded that the early Holocene transition from semi-freshwater to semi-marine environments was progressive, thus contradicting the catastrophic flood hypothesis of the Black Sea by Mediterranean waters. The Black Sea water appears to have also discharged, via the Sea of Marmora, into the eastern Mediterranean, which apparently caused tremendous changes in the sea temperatures, salinity, and other oceanographic parameters (Thiede 1978;Thunell 1979;Thunell and Williams 1983).…”

We review the long history of Russian scientific study of the major late Quaternary palaeodrainages and palaeolakes in northern Eurasia to provide overviews of (1) past research efforts (mainly published in the Russian language) and (2) recent studies that include contributions from those outside of the former Soviet Union region. There are two major groups of catastrophic flooding phenomena and related palaeodrainage and palaeolake systems in this region: (1) those involving large-scale lowland basins and (2) those involving upland intermontane basins. Many of these palaeodrainages and palaeolakes were active during the late Quaternary, though the available age data are inconclusive in regard to more exact timing and synchronicity. These palaeodrainages and palaeolakes in the late Quaternary are strongly linked with climatic change, most notably to ice age. For the megalakes in large-scale basins, spillover events probably occurred because of impoundment by the late Pleistocene Arctic ice sheets. In some cases, gradual transgressions of the megalakes caused by varying climatic conditions could also have contributed to the spillovers. Some of these spillover events may have been catastrophic. Ice-dammed lakes formed when drainage into intermontane basins was impounded by late Pleistocene alpine-type glaciers. The collapses of the glacier dams caused downstream catastrophic flooding, producing a characteristic suite of flood-related landforms. In the Azas Plateau volcanic field, there is evidence for Icelandic-type subglacial flooding. ARTICLE HISTORY
