A composite high-resolution diatom stratigraphy from three piston cores and one box-core in the deep sub-basin of Lake Titicaca reveals large moisture variations during the past 30 kyr in the Altiplano region. Diatom sequences indicate orbital and millennial-scale variability in water level and salinity. The pelagic freshwater diatom species Cyclotella andina and Cyclotella stelligera dominate Glacial-age sediments, suggesting that the lake was above its present outlet. Generally, wet conditions continued until 11,000 cal yr BP, as indicated by high percentages of freshwater planktonic diatoms. Large pulses of benthic diatom species between about 11,000 and 10,000 cal yr BP suggest brief intervals of largeamplitude declines in lake level. During the early Holocene (10,000-8,500 cal yr BP), a freshwater diatom assemblage suggests overflowing conditions. Pelagic freshwater diatoms are replaced ca. 8,500 cal yr BP by the salinity-indifferent species Cyclotella meneghiniana and by benthic taxa, indicating the beginning of lake regression. During the mid-Holocene (6,000-3,500 cal yr BP), the abundance of the saline taxon Chaetoceros muelleri, coupled with high abundances of epiphytic and epipelic diatoms, indicates maximum salinity and lowest lake levels in the entire 30,000 year record. Lake transgression began ca. 4,000 cal yr BP, and the lake achieved modern levels by about 1,500 cal yr BP. These water-level changes imply changes in effective moisture, most likely resulting from large precipitation changes. Precipitation was high throughout the Last Glacial Maximum (21,000-18,000 cal yr BP), likely due to an enhanced South American Summer Monsoon during peak summer insolation in the Southern Hemisphere. In contrast, the mid-Holocene transition was dryer than today in association with an austral summer insolation minimum and the subsequent weakening of the summer monsoon.

Abstract. Paleoclimate reconstructions reveal that Earth system has experienced sub-millennial scale climate changes over the past two millennia in response to internal/external forcing. Although sub-millennial hydroclimate fluctuations have been detected in the central Andes during this interval, the timing, magnitude, extent and direction of change of these events remain poorly defined. Here, we present a reconstruction of hydroclimate variations on the Pacific slope of the central Andes based on exceptionally wellpreserved plant macrofossils and associated archaeological remains from a hyperarid drainage (Quebrada Maní, ∼21 • S, 1000 m a.s.l.) in the Atacama Desert. During the late Holocene, riparian ecosystems and farming social groups flourished in the hyperarid Atacama core as surface water availability increased throughout this presently sterile landscape. Twenty-six radiocarbon dates indicate that these events occurred between 1050-680, 1615-1350 and 2500-2040 cal yr BP. Regional comparisons with rodent middens and other records suggest that these events were synchronous with pluvial stages detected at higher-elevations in the central Andes over the last 2500 yr. These hydroclimate changes also coincide with periods of pronounced SST gradients in the Tropical Pacific (La Niña-like mode), conditions that are conducive to significantly increased rainfall in the central Andean highlands and flood events in the low-elevation watersheds at inter-annual timescales. Our findings indicate that the positive anomalies in the hyperarid Atacama over the past 2500 yr represent a regional response of the central Andean climate system to changes in the global hydrological cycle at centennial timescales. Furthermore, our results provide support for the role of tropical Pacific sea surface temperature gradient changes as the primary mechanism responsible for climate fluctuations in the central Andes. Finally, our results constitute independent evidence for comprehending the major trends in cultural evolution of prehistoric peoples that inhabited the region.

An ecological calibration dataset for freshwater ostracods from 33 localities throughout West-Pomerania (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) was evaluated using multivariate statistical methods. A total of 47 freshwater ostracod species were identified. Nine species were rediscovered after 100 years since the last published record and Candonopsis scourfieldi and Pseudocandona sucki was recorded for the first time in the study area. Special emphasis is put on the phenology of each species to gain information on the water characteristics at the time of their last moult. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that the ecological variables such as water temperature, Ca, Mg, and lake area were statistically most significant (p < 0.005; n = 72) in explaining variation in the distribution of ostracod assemblages. In addition, a transfer function was developed for paleolimnological approaches, based on a weighted-averaging (WA) model to calculate water temperature from the relative abundances of 22 selected ostracod species. This model was successfully applied to infer lake water temperature from subfossil ostracod assemblages collected from lacustrine deposits in northeast Germany (Lake Krakower See).
