The Late Pleistocene to the Holocene is a time interval that covers the climate transition from a cold to a warm interglacial regime. In the Baltic region, many studies have focused on estimating environmental responses to climatic forcing using palynological and stratigraphic proxies of glacial and periglacial settings. Herein we describe the mixed lacustrine-aeolian succession of the Zervynos-2 section (south-eastern Lithuania), located in the north-eastern part of the European Sand Belt. The succession and the sedimentation styles were characterized by granulometric parameters, structural features, dolomite/calcite ratio, and paleobotanical macro-remains. Our analyses revealed that the Zervynos-2 paleolake formed on the sandur (outwash) plain during the final stage of the Pleistocene. The onset of lake sedimentation was caused by sudden submergence of a sandbody-constrained paleovalley. Carbonate ratios and macro-remains from the lower gyttja material showed the presence of substantial millennial-scale oscillations, which suggests a delayed response to the isotopically derived paleotemperatures. The transition to the fast sand sedimentation started approximately in the Middle Holocene and is interpreted here as being caused by warming and drying of the climate in the Baltic region. The upper Holocene portion of the section represents the transition to exclusively aeolian sedimentation with lower accumulation rates that are likely related to a long-term cooling trend. The obtained results support the conjecture that there is a direct but delayed positive correlation between dolomite and calcite ratios in lake sediments and the climatic signal in the Greenland GISP2 record.

Abstract. Vorgestellt werden die Ergebnisse von Multiproxy-Untersuchungen an einem 3 m langen Sedimentprofil des Glowe-Paläosees, welches den Zeitraum Prä-Bølling bis mittleres Präboreal umfasst. Die spätglazial-frühholozäne Landschaftsentwicklung, die Klimaschwankungen, Gewässerentwicklung, Seespiegelvariation und Vegetationsgeschichte umfasst, wird mit Hilfe von Pollen-, Diatomeen-, Makrorest-, Mollusken- sowie sedimentologisch-geochemischen Analysen und 14C-Datierungen rekonstruiert. Der Paläosee entstand mit Schwinden des Permafrostes im Bølling und entwickelte sich im Allerød zu einem 3–4 m tiefen, artenarmen, makrophytenreichen Stillgewässer. Die Vegetationsbedeckung ging in der Jüngeren Dryas stark zurück, um im Präboreal schnell mit höherer Dichte zurückzukehren. Phasen kühleren Klimas können mit der Gerzensee-Schwankung, der Jüngeren Dryas sowie der Rammelbeek-Schwankung parallelisiert werden, die palynologisch jeweils zweigeteilt sind. Eindeutige Hinweise auf die Ältere Dryas fanden sich dagegen nicht. Die kühlen Phasen waren mit verstärkten allogenen Materialeinträgen in den See verbunden, wobei in der Jüngeren Dryas überwiegend solifluidale, in der Gerzensee- und in der Rammelbeek-Schwankung fluviale Transportprozesse dominierten. Die markanteste Veränderung der paläoökologischen Parameter des Paläosees wurde durch die schnelle Erwärmung zu Beginn des Präboreals verursacht. In den wärmeren Klimaphasen wurde die Vegetationsentwicklung beeinflusst durch die Nähe des Baltischen Eissees, die zu einer gegenüber südlicheren Gebieten verzögerten Ausbreitung der Kiefer führte. Die länger andauernden Klimawechsel bestimmten auch die Variation in der chemischen Zusammensetzung der Sedimente, der Diatomeenflora und der Makrophytenvegetation. Kleinskalige Schichtwechsel vor allem im älteren Teil des Profils können bisher nicht erklärt werden. Aus dem aufgeschlossenen Schichtenverlauf wird eine Kurve der Seespiegelentwicklung abgeleitet, die einen schnellen Anstieg im frühen Allerød und einen verlangsamten Anstieg bis zum Höchststand in der Jüngeren Dryas erkennen lässt. Im frühen Präboreal setzte eine schnelle Senkung des Seespiegels ein, die im mittleren Präboreal zur Verlandung des Sees führte.
