Holding Power of Bioabsorbable Ciprofloxacin-Containing Self-reinforced Poly-L/DL-lactide 70/30 Bioactive Glass 13 Miniscrews in Human Cadaver Bone

Abstract: Antibiotics-plus bioactive glass-containing bioabsorbable self-reinforced (SR) polylactide screws have been developed for antibacterial osteoconductive bone fixation. The aim of the present study was to test the pullout properties of these recently developed miniscrews. Ciprofloxacin-plus bioactive glass-containing SR-polylactide miniscrews (BC) were compared with miniscrews made of neat SR-polylactide (A), SR-polylactide with bioactive glass (B), and ciprofloxacin-containing SR-polylactide (C). BC miniscrews … Show more

“…The silk pins reached a maximum shear stress of 80.2 ± 8.5 MPa, which is comparable to that of the HFIP solvent-based systems (~ 90 MPa) [28]. These values are also comparable with the current resorbable systems which have a shear force of 100–185 MPa [46, 47]. The mechanical properties of silk plates were measured by a four-point bending test using four-hole plates of 29 mm length and 2 mm thickness (Figure 2h).…”

“…The clinical, radiological and histological results were similar at follow-up times of 1 to 6 weeks, whereas conservative treatment yielded less successful results. SR-P(L/DL)LA 70/30 miniscrews containing antibiotics and bioactive glass have been developed for antibacterial osteoconductive bone fixation and have been found to have good holding power (Leinonen et al, 2002).…”

“…In addition, multifunctional screws and plates will be developed, which are in part based on the use of bioabsorbable implants as a source of conventional pharmacologic and new biologic drugs. Antibiotic-releasing screws have already been developed to prevent and treat bone infections [2, [106][107][108]. Other types of multifunctional biomaterials contain agents such as growth factors to confer osteoinductivity to these implants.…”
