How specific interactions between plant and pathogenic, commensal, or mutualistic microorganisms are mediated and how bacteria are selected by a plant are important questions to address. Here, an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant called chs5 partially deficient in the biogenesis of isoprenoid precursors was shown to extend its metabolic remodeling to phenylpropanoids and lipids in addition to carotenoids, chlorophylls, and terpenoids. Such a metabolic profile was concomitant to increased colonization of the phyllosphere by the pathogenic strain Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000. A thorough microbiome analysis by 16S sequencing revealed that Streptomyces had a reduced colonization potential in chs5. This study revealed that the bacteria–Arabidopsis interaction implies molecular processes impaired in the chs5 mutant. Interestingly, our results revealed that the metabolic status of A. thaliana was crucial for the specific recruitment of Streptomyces into the microbiota. More generally, this study highlights specific as well as complex molecular interactions that shape the plant microbiota.

A wide spectrum of traditional medical methods employs Holarrhena floribunda (HF). A major source of novel pharmaceutically active compounds has always been plants. When it comes to treating disorders that do not respond well to synthetic medications, the modern medical system offers a wide range of herbal choices. There are a number of plants that have been used as medicine from ancient times to heal illnesses. Medicinal properties of herbal plants can be found in their chemical components. It is widely used in Togolese folk medicine as Holarrhena floribunda. False rubber tree, Holarrhena floribunda, belongs to the Apocynaceae family and may reach a height of 17 metres. Many components of the plant are used medicinally in West Africa. This plant has a variety of chemical components that are used to cure malaria, amoebic illness, diarrhoea, fever, infertility, and diabetes through the usage of plant parts including stem bark and leaves. In addition to highlighting Holarrhena floribunda's chemical composition, this paper also examines the plant's pharmacological properties.

Seeds of native species from the rain forest (Amazon) are source of chitinases and their protein extracts exhibited strong and broad antifungal activity. Numerous plant species native to the Amazon have not yet been chemically studied. Studies of seeds are scarcer, since adversities in accessing study areas and seasonality pose constant hurdles to systematic research. In this study, proteins were extracted from seeds belonging to endemic Amazon species and were investigated for the first time. Proteolytic activity, peptidase inhibitors, and chitinases were identified, but chitinolytic activity predominated. Four proteins were purified through chromatography and identified as lectin and chitinases by MS/MS analyses. The proteins were examined for inhibition of a phytopathogen (Fusarium oxysporum). Analyses by fluorescence microscopy suggested binding of propidium iodide to DNA of fungal spores, revealing that spore integrity was lost when accessed by the proteins. Further structural and functional analyses of defensive proteins belonging to species facing highly complex ecosystems such as Amazonia should be conducted, since these could provide new insights into specificity and synergism involving defense proteins of plants submitted to a very complex ecosystem.
