Hodgkin’s Disease and Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia

Abstract: The association of chronic lymphatic leukemia (CLL) with Hodgkin’s disease (HD) is rare. A review of the literature revealed only 19 cases previously reported and 2 additional cases are herein described. CLL is generally the initial phase of this clinical combination and HD is typically diagnosed at postmortem. Tuberculosis was found concomitantly in 5 cases and suspected in 3 additional cases. The development of HD in patients with CLL is most probably coincidental.

“…In all the elderly patients Hodgkin's disease was the second malignancy diagnosed, and Hodgkin's disease was the cause of death in 3 of the 4 who were deceased. In addition to the solid tumors, three patients in the elderly group had chronic lymphatic leukemia [11], and one patient had polycythe mia vera, an association which has been previously observed [4],…”

“…11 other malignancies occurred, among them 2 cases of chronic lymphatic leukaemia. This has previously been described in patients suffering from HD (Lokich & Moloney 1972). 6 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma developing during the observation period after treatment for HD have recently been described (Krikorian et a1 1979).…”

“…1,4,10,30 An interesting and more etiologically challenging transformation is HD terminally complicating CLL. Although several reports of this were published in the 1940-1970's, 7,13,[17][18][19]27,29,31 some authors refuted the diagnosis as misinterpretation of diffuse histiocytic lymphoma with "Reed-Sternberg-like" cells. 11,20 In recent years, with modern diagnostic tools of immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular genetics, several further reports of this phenomenon have been confirmed.…”
