Hodgkin lymphoma: A review and update on recent progress

Abstract: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a unique hematopoietic neoplasm characterized by cancerous Reed-Sternberg cells in an inflammatory background. Patients are commonly diagnosed with HL in their 20s and 30s, and they present with supradiaphragmatic lymphadenopathy, often with systemic B symptoms. Even in advanced-stage disease, HL is highly curable with combination chemotherapy, radiation, or combined-modality treatment. Although the same doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine chemotherapeutic regimen has … Show more

“…HL is subdivided into two main subgroups: classical HL representing over 90% of HL, with high FDG uptake, and nodular lymphocyte‐predominant HL, which typically shows indolent behavior and low if any FDG uptake . 18 F‐FDG‐PET/CT has been included as standard imaging modality for staging and posttreatment assessment in classical HL .…”

“…Some of them are aggressive with fatal prognosis, while others are curable. Auto-HSCT preceded by high-dose chemotherapy is often employed as standard treatment in patients with both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (35)(36)(37).…”

“…Therapeutic outcomes may vary according to clinical behavior, whether indolent or aggressive, and patients may suffer various patterns of recurrence requiring subsequent lines of rescue therapies. Dismal prognosis still affects a significant fraction of patients with mature B-cell lymphomas, and new treatment strategies should be conceived to improve both objective response and survival (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9).…”
