Hochpolymere Verbindungen. 8. Mitteilung.

Show more

“…It is interesting that Staudinger had postulated the possibility of synthesizingl adder-type poly(cyclopentadiene) almost a centurya go (1926) via repeated cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene, [13] two years before Dielsa nd Alder had even published their first seminal report on the later known Diels-Alder reaction in the same journal. [14] Although no polymer could be obtained due to the thermodynamically disfavoredp ericyclic polymerization of cyclopentadiene and the proposed polymer structure was also incorrect, this represents one of the earliest attempts to synthesize aladderp olymer.…”

“…The research history of CPD polymerization can be dated back to the 1920s. In 1926, Staudinger and Burson11, 12 reported fundamental investigations on the polymerization of CPD with a large number of metal halides (e.g., TiCl 4 , BCl 3 , SnCl 4 , FeCl 3 , and AsCl 3 ), at low temperatures, to produce moderate‐to‐high‐molecular‐weight polyCPD. Under these conditions, they obtained a rubbery and vulcanizable product that readily absorbed oxygen with gelation, whereas an insoluble product formed upon prolonged standing in air.…”

“…22] must not dominate. In addition the synthesised HCp-derivatives may dimerise thermally (Diels-Alderreaction) or polymerise (1,2-and 1,4-polymerisation) [38]. The latter reaction is initiated by Lewis-acids and may prevent isolation under the acidic dehydration reaction.…”
