Hmong Older Adults’ Perceptions of Insider and Outsider Researchers

Abstract: Findings suggest that increasing research participation of Hmong (and possibly other) participants, particularly when researchers do not share ethnic membership, can be achieved by building trust. This study also suggests a more nuanced perception of insider status, as a continuum, rather than a dichotomy, may be a more accurate reflection of the relationship between participants and researchers.

“…Information about the study, and digital recruitment materials such as digital fliers and a prerecorded video from the researcher were used to promote the study. To mitigate the mistrust that Hmong Americans often have of research [21], study invitation materials and a video clarified that the lead researcher was also Hmong American. The video campaign was 1 min and 47 s long in English.…”

“…Although both insider and outsider immigrant community gatekeepers are known to assist researchers in recruiting from immigrant communities (Katigbak, Foley, Robert, & Hutchinson, 2016;Lor & Bowers, 2018), their "scope of recruitment" may differ. Within this context, the scope of recruitment includes the knowledge, skills, and activities community gatekeepers possess and/or perform to identify and get potential participants interested in research.…”
