[HMIM][Br9]: a Room-temperature Ionic Liquid Based on a Polybromide Anion

Abstract: [HMIM] [Br 9 ] ([HMIM] = 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium) has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. Conductivity measurements show a high electrical conductivity like other polybromides.

“…[10] The newly published solid-state structure of a [Br 20 ] 2À polybromide network [11] (already seeing preliminary application as an electrolyte component in a p-type dye-sensitized solar cell) [12] and similar networked structures [13] have reignited interest in the area. Recent work by Haller et al has identified discrete nonabromide [14] and undecabromide anions, [13a] . [16] Structures of intermediate polybromide order such as pentabromide and heptabromide anions have also been structurally characterised, [13c, 17] while the tridecabromide monoanion has only been postulated computationally [18] despite appearing as a component of the aforementioned [Br 20 ] 2À anion.…”

“…Intriguing examples for the utilization of halogens are the polybromides synthesized in ILs [43,69,70,71,72]. While polyiodides were known with up to 29 iodine atoms [73], the size of the corresponding polybromides was limited to a maximum of 10 atoms [74,75] before new approaches including ILs (Feldmann group) were developed [76].…”

“…[6,7] Additionally to their use as halogenating agents, [8] these compounds have ag reat potential for application as ionic liquids (IL) or electrolytes in redox flow batteries. [9] Like these polybromides, polychlorides exhibit apotential application as easy-to-handle chlorinating agents.T he fact that chlorine is used during the synthesis or is contained in 55 %ofindustrial produced chemicals emphasizes the importance of polychloride chemistry. [10] It is therefore surprising that the chemistry of the lighter halogens is less developed and thus less comprehensive.Inthe case of chlorine,t he only known structure beside [Cl 3 ] À is [Cl 3 …”
