HLA-DRB1*0101 is associated with the genetic susceptibility to develop lichen planus in the Mexican Mestizo population

Abstract: The etiology of lichen planus (LP) is still unknown and previous studies have found an association between LP and HLA-DR1, DR2, DR3, DR9 and DR10 in different populations. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of the HLA-DRB1 alleles in Mexican Mestizo patients with LP. The aim of this study was to determine the gene frequency of HLA-DR locus in Mexican Mestizo patients with LP. We studied 20 patients with LP and 99 healthy Mexican Mestizo controls. HLA-DRB1 was performed by PCR-SSO reverse dot… Show more

“…Interestingly, in Jewish patients with oral erosive lichen planus, there was a significant association of the disease with HLA-DR2 and a decrease in DR4 frequency (16). HLA-DRB1*01: 01 was found to be associated with a genetic susceptibility for LP in the Mexican Mestizo population (6). To our knowledge, the present study is the first to examine the association of HLA and LPP.…”

“…The literature on the ethnic predilection of the disease is sparse; in the 3 largest case series from North American institutions, the majority of patients were Caucasian, commensurate with the percentage of Caucasians in the general population (2,29,30). The association between HLA antigens and LP has been studied extensively, but the findings differ by disease variants (7,(11)(12)(13)15) and by populations studied (6,8,9,16,17). For example, serological typing of HLA DR1 was positive in 80% of American patients with generalized cutaneous LP compared with 25% of healthy controls (21).…”

“…LLP is considered to be because of a cell-mediated immune reaction of unknown cause and one could speculate that this is because of immune recognition of a genetically distinct subclone. LP has been associated with specific HLA subtypes DRB1*0101, DR1, DR2, DR3, DR9, and DR10 in different populations (Luis-Montoya et al, 2007). Although no specific genetic tests were performed in our and other reported case series, we believe that LLP is a remarkable model to study the interaction between the environment and genotype.…”
