HLA DR4 and rheumatoid arthritis in Japanese people.

Abstract: SUMMARY Eighty-eight Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 104 normal Japanese persons were typed for HLA A, B, C, and DR antigens. The frequency of HLA DR4 was 70 * 5 % in patients compared with 461 % in normal controls (P<0 00 1). However, a sex difference in the frequency of HLA DR4 in patients was noted. HLA DR4 was found in 80 6% of male patients, which was highly significant compared with controls (P<0 '0005), while only a borderline increase to 60 5% was found in female patients (P<0 05). In a… Show more

“…In the Israeli population, in which DR4/Dw10 is the preponderant DR4 subtype, no association between DR4 and RA was observed (16). In the case of DR2, neutral glutamine at the 70th position is substituted by aspartic acid, and a neutral or even negative association with RA has been reported (4,7).…”

“…In patients with diffuse panbronchiolitis, the frequency of the HLA haplotype, A24/l l-B54-Cwl-DR4 (4.1), is significantly increased (2). On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis is also knownto be significantly correlated with HLA-DR4 and B54 in Japanese patients (3). We have identified 56 patients with diffuse panbronchiolitis, 4 of whomshowed concomitant rheumatoid arthritis.…”

“…The increase in the frequency of HLA-DR4 in RA is well known, but the relative risk varies widely (4)(5)(6). In Japan, the relative risk for HLA-DR4 has been reported to be between 2.4 and 3.3 (6,34).…”
