HLA antigens in malignant melanoma

Abstract: HLA-A, -B, -C and -D typing was performed on 54 Norwegian patients with microscopically verified malignant melanoma. A slight, but non-significant increase in the frequency of HLA-B27 and LD 108 was demonstrated among the patients compared with healthy Norwegian controls.

“…[4][5][6][7] Various associations between HLA type and NMSC risk have been noted in the non-immunosuppressed population (Cw3, DR1, DR7, DR4 and DR53), [19][20][21][26][27][28][29] as well as with MM (A9, B8, B27, B35, B40, B49, DR4 and DR5). [30][31][32][33][34][35] Negative associations have also been noted between NMSC and B17 (B58) and DR3, and MM and B7. In two separate studies in Melbourne, Australia, Czarnecki et al found HLA-DR4 to be associated with an increased risk of multiple BCC and MM, 28 as well as multiple BCC and SCC.…”

“…The genetic restrictions for monocytes in antigen-specific antibody responses of human B cells have not been reported. In T-cell blastogenic responses to antigen stimulation, Bergholtz and Thorsby demonstrated the requirement for DR-compatible monocytes (35). In addition, Kurnick et al (11) have reported the requirement of APCs with shared HLA-D antigens for the continued proliferation of antigen-specific T cells in the presence of the appropriate soluble antigen.…”

“…No consistent pattern of inheritance, however, has been demonstrated. Attempts to show a population association between the HLA system and this disease have been largely inconclusive (Lamm et al 1974, Bergholtz et al 1976, La1 & Jorgensen 1976. We report a large kindred with multiple cases of malignant melanoma in which susceptibility to the disease is apparently inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and segregates with the HLA complex.…”
