HLA Antigens in Borderline and Essential Hypertension

Abstract: The subject of investigation was the comparison of HLA antigen distribution in people with borderline hypertension (BH) and essential hypertension (EH). One hundred twenty-one men with BH and 60 men with EH were studied. The HLA frequency was compared with that in 858 healthy men, who were blood donors. In BH the increase of B16, B18, and Cw4 and the decrease of A11 and B5 antigen frequency were found. In comparison with St. Petersburg's healthy population, patients with EH were characterized by increasing ant… Show more

“…A review of the literature up to 1989 was presented in a previous publication. 1 Since then, an association with HLA-B18 was reported in Russian patients, 2 as previously reported in French 3 and Canadian 4 patients. An association with HLA-DR4 was detected in Brazilian patients, 5 and with HLA-DR2 in North Chinese patients.…”

“…One of the genetic systems for which a possible relationship with EH has been considered is the HLA system and this has been documented in linkage studies. 2,3 However, studies to analyse the possible association between EH and antigens or alleles of the HLA system, mainly HLA-B and HLA-DR, [3][4][5][6][7][8] have failed to yield consistent results.…”

“…The MHC genes themselves may be considered candidates as the immune system of the SHR is dysfunctional and hypertension in the SHR strain appears to have an autoimmune component 20 . Furthermore, there are alterations in MHC antigen frequencies in human hypertension 21 …”
