HLA Antigens among Chinese in Taiwan: Association of Cw1 and Cw3 on the Same Haplotype

Abstract: HLA-A, B and C phenotypes and gene frequencies of Chinese living in Taiwan are presented. Cw1 and Cw3 were frequently found to segregate together on the same haplotype.

“…Whereas C1R was only lysed by anti-HLA-Cw4 alloantisera, the HLA-B46 transfectant was also lysed by alloantisera reactive with either HLA-B46 or HLA-Cw3. Furthermore, the anti-Cw3 alloantisera reactive with the HLA-B46 transfectant are precisely those that characteristically react with cells expressing the B46 haplotypes (18)(19)(20)(21)(22). These results confirm the identity of the cloned gene as HLA-B46 and show the HLA-B46 molecule is directly responsible for all the anti-Cw3 reactivity of the HLA-B46 haplotypes.…”

“…Payne and colleagues discovered that B46 is invariably found on haplotypes having unusual reactivities with alloantisera specific for both HLA-Cwl and HLA-Cw3 (15), a serological pattern which they termed the Cwl x 3 antigen (also called CwB, Cx46, Cwl + 3, C-Bangkok and CSH1). This serological phenomenon has been a focus of study (1 6-20) and it is now well-established that in oriental populations "Cwl and Cw3 are commonly expressed on the same haplotype" (20), and are almost invariably associated with HLA-B46. Goodfellow and Payne (1 7) examined the molecular relationship of the epitopes recognized by anti-Cwl and anti-Cw3 antisera on cells having the B46, Cwl x 3 combination and found they were directed against two independent sets of molecules.…”
