HL-A and ABO antigens and malignant melanoma.A study of 212 cases

Abstract: Two hundred twelve melanoma patients, including 38 prospective and 174 retrospective cases, were ABO and HL‐A typed, and the results were compared with those obtained in a sample of 562 healthy controls. The phenotype frequencies within the ABO system were identical in patients and controls. A lower frequency of HL‐A7 (significant at the 5% level) was observed in the melanoma patients. Furthermore, deviations from the controls were observed in the following subgroups of patients: a deficiency of HL‐A7 in the f… Show more

“…A BO blood groups Lamm et al (1974) reported a comparison of the results of H LA and ABO typing in 212 malignant melanoma patients andthose obtained from 562 healthy controls. The distribution of the ABO antigens in the malignant melanoma patients as a whole and in the subgroups divided according to sex and prognosis for survival, showed no significant deviation from the distribution in 562 controls.…”

“…Central to this problem are the inexact nature and limitations of clinical diagnosis. For example, it may be presumptuous to assume that HLA studies showing no association with cutaneous melanoma (Gordon 1973;Lamm et al 1974) also apply to ocular melanoma. Nevertheless, these studies are included in reviews of ocular disease (Ohno 1979), despite evidence that the natural history of cutaneous and ocular melanomas may differ Uakobiec 1980).…”

“…Significant correlations between the presence of certain HLA genes and the occurrence of skin melanoma have been described [1,2]. The presence of HLA-B40 was related to both the occurrence and the prognosis of skin melanoma [3,4].…”
