“…In one study, transgender women reporting substance use of any nature were more likely to report needle use to inject drugs, injecting silicone, and sharing needles [29]. Injection drug use has been associated with testing positive for HIV among transgender women [12]. In settings where needles and syringes are readily available via pharmacies and exchange programs, very little needle sharing has been identified [31].…”

“…HIV vulnerability is not distributed evenly across transgender populations. Within the U.S., African-American and Latina transgender women bear the heaviest burden [8, 12]. Incidence rates among transgender women of color are high [8]; and testing data suggest that infection often occurs early, during adolescence [6].…”

“…The limited epidemiological data currently available suggest even greater disparities among transgender women, who may have HIV prevalence rates up to 60 %. [5][6][7] These alarming trends indicate shortcomings of current HIV prevention programs to effectively engage YMCSM and transgender women. Recent data indicate that nearly 75 % of YMCSM in the USA may not be reached current prevention interventions.…”

“…27 Although more recent studies have included higher proportions of ethnic/racial minority MSM and transgender persons, these studies do not readily report specifically on YMCSM or young transgender women, and how the results of these studies translate into tailored social media-based interventions for urban YMCSM and transgender women is unclear. Given the large disparities in new HIV infections among YMCSM and transgender women, 2,4,28 studies that specifically examine social media use and access among these groups are needed. Therefore, to inform future HIV-related interventions engaging urban, YMCSM, and young transgender women, we conducted a formative study in New York City that assessed how these youth accessed and used social media and the association of self-reported characteristics of social media use with sexual risk behaviors.…”
