HIV-related neurological disability and prospects for rehabilitation

Abstract: The worldwide epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) continues to expand. Modest progress in prolonging survival has focused attention on the issue of quality of life among persons living with AIDS. Physical functional status (disability) is one of the most important determinants of quality of life. This paper outlines a conceptual approach to AIDS disability and provides new data examining the epidemiology of physical functional deficits in the population. In addition, the common neuromuscular … Show more

“…Although 79% were considered independent for the activities of daily living, approximately 46% were not able to return to their previous activities and 49% had already left their professional lives because of the HIV infection (disease-related factors). In a study made of 391 persons with AIDS, disability was relatively unusual, mild and moderate disability were more common, data also confirmed by our study [14].…”

“…Presently, some patients are receiving orientation about physical activity but only a few were directed towards professional help, especially at the onset of the illness. HIV infection has a propensity to produce a great variety of disabling conditions, and functional disability is generally the patient's primary problem [14]. Our data confirm this in the great majority of patients (91%) presenting some degree of functional disability.…”

“…The QOL of those infected with HIV has been assessed by many researchers [ 25–27]. However, little is known about specific physical functional deficits [ 16, 28], although one of the most important determinants of QOL in HIV‐infected haemophiliacs is their physical functional status. AIMS 2 is an appropriate means of evaluating the physical functional status of asymptomatic HIV‐positive haemophiliacs, because it is a comprehensive measure of health status in patients with arthropathy, is considered valid and reliable, and is widely used across the world.…”

“…Las manifestaciones de discapacidad son de naturaleza multidimensional, impredecible y episódica, con dificultades para enfrentar el día a día, desafíos para la inclusión social y la incertidumbre sobre el futuro, por lo tanto el rol de la rehabilitación debe aumentar (14,18,15,16).…”
