HIV Incidence and Predictors of Incident HIV among Men Who Have Sex with Men Attending a Sexual Health Clinic in Melbourne, Australia

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for HIV infection and the incidence in men who have sex with men (MSM). It is important to identify subgroups of MSM in which preventive interventions such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) offered at the time of their last negative test would be considered cost-effective.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study of MSM attending Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC) during 2007–2013 with at least two HIV tests within 12 months of each… Show more

“…While these two studies employed a different methodology to estimate incidence, their results suggest that incidence has remained relatively stable and high over the past 10 years among men attending STI clinics [19]. Our estimates are also comparable with those for cohorts of MSM in Portugal (2.8 per 100 PY) [20], Spain (2.4 per 100 PY) [21], Germany (3.3%) [22] and the USA (2.4 per 100 PY) [23] but higher than that for clinic-attending MSM in Australia (1.3 per 100 PY) [24]. Different mathematical models have been developed to estimate HIV incidence among the general MSM population.…”

“…Potential antibiotic resistance has raised concerns that we may see further rises in gonorrhoea among MSM [12–16] with possible associated rises in HIV acquisition [1722]. …”

“…Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to severe sequelae, most notably pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility in women (1). Moreover, gonorrhea infection can promote the transmission of other STIs, including HIV (2). A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report suggested there were 87 million new cases of gonorrhea in 2016 (3).…”
