HIV epidemic in central african republic: High prevalence rates in both rural and urban areas

Abstract: A sentinel serosurveillance study was conducted in Central African Republic to estimate the prevalence of HIV seropositivity in the general adult population in each province so that the public health authorities can target HIV prevention programmes to the priority areas. Blood samples were collected from women attending 48 antenatal clinics in urban and rural areas of the Central African Republic. “…The design and setting of new adjuvants and immunogens aimed at eliciting both systemic and mucosal responses to limit HIV spread are highly desirable and anticipated goals worldwide. An immunization strategy aimed at obtaining strong and long-lasting mucosal immunity could significantly limit HIV spread, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, and other areas where sexually transmitted diseases are heavy health and social burdens (16,24).…”

“…Unfortunately, most do not perform sufficiently well to be used as routine field diagnostic tests (6,9,11,12). Here, we assessed the diagnostic performance of the SDHO MTB test (SDHO Laboratories Inc., Canada), a novel and commercially available serological test for the detection of PTB, in the Central African Republic, which is a setting with high prevalences of both TB (13) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (1,7).…”

“…during 2000-2002 among women of child-bearing age frequenting an antenatal care clinic, and is more than twofold greater than that detected by Matsika-Claquin et al [2004] near Bangassou. The patient population composed of wretched and dejected women who only occasionally visited this rural health facility might explain the high prevalence of HIV infection.…”

“…However, from November 2001 to October 2002, a 14.3% HIV prevalence has been reported among antenatal clinic attendees, 67% of whom lived in urban areas [Matsika-Claquin et al, 2004]. In this study, a higher rate was observed in northern Central African Republic (bordering on Chad and Sudan) than in the South (bordering on the Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo).…”
