HIV-associated lymphoma sub-type distribution, immunophenotypes and survival in an urban clinic population

Abstract: HIV-infected patients have an increased risk for both Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas. A retrospective cohort of all HIV-infected patients diagnosed with lymphoma in urban clinics from 2000-2013 was evaluated to characterize the distribution and determine effects of sub-type and immunophenotype on survival. Of 160 cases identified, 131 (82%) had complete information and were analyzed. The most common sub-types were diffuse large B cell (41%), Burkitt (21%) and Hodgkin lymphoma (18%). Advanced (78% stage III/… Show more

“…Il a été remarqué que la fréquence de certains lymphomes chez les patients séropositifs reste élevée, même après la cART, constituant une cause importante de morbidité et de mortalité chez les sujets atteints (Riedel et al, 2016). Ce qui est intéressant c'est que la majorité de ces lymphomes sont des lymphomes B agressifs.…”

“…The pathogenesis of DLBCL in the setting of HIV infection has been linked to low CD4 counts, high HIV viral loads and a high prevalence of oncogenic viruses, particularly Epstein-Barr virus. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) related lymphomas have higher prevalence of extranodal disease, involvement of unusual locations and often present as advanced (stage III/IV) disease at initial diagnosis (69). HIV-associated DLBCL has some differentiating imaging features when compared to DLBCL in the general population.…”

“…24 Nevertheless, achievement and maintenance of virologic suppression after cancer diagnosis have been associated with improved outcomes, 25 particularly for HIV-associated lymphomas. 26,27 Therefore, further research is needed to determine the typical virologic and immunologic outcomes in HIV-infected patients after a cancer diagnosis and whether these outcomes differ by the type of cancer.…”
