HIV and Syphilis Prevalence Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Cross-Sectional Survey of 61 Cities in China

Abstract: HIV and syphilis prevalences among MSM in China are high and the 2 epidemics are largely separate geographically. Three segments of the Chinese MSM population each have different demographic and sexual risk "profiles" that suggest high potential for bridging infection across geographies, generations, and sexes.

“…Guo et al (12) reported that the prevalence rates of HIV, HCV, and syphilis infection among MSM were 5.8z, 0.7z, and 27.7z in a comprehensive survey involving MSM in Nanjing and Yangzhou, Jiangsu. Our results for the HIV and syphilis infection rates were higher than the overall prevalence (HIV 4.9z and syphilis 11.8z) among MSM in a larger national survey across 61 cities (13), which suggested that the HIV and syphilis epidemic is more serious in Jiangsu than nationwide. However, the HIV-HCV co-infection rate in Zhenjiang (0.2z) was lower than the prevalence (1.94z) among HIV-infected MSM in China (14).…”

“…[16][17][18][19][20][21] All Chinese and international prevalence data were taken from the most recent published source. Analysis of MSM HIV prevalence among was completed by comparing the MSM HIV prevalence at the origin and destination of each journey made by a sex tourist.…”

“…[9] Another key finding of our study was that sex tourists tend to travel from locations with low MSM HIV prevalence areas to locations with high MSM HIV prevalence, consistent with previous research from China. [26] This is likely related to the higher known burden of HIV in urban areas, [20] to where domestic sex tourists tended to travel. This presents a concern for disease transmission when travelers return to their home regions with lower HIV prevalence.…”

“…The high rates of Internet and smart phone usage in China particularly provide a strong foundation for online network-based interventions [27][28][29]. In this study, we examined "online sexual health influencers", defined as individuals with strong influence on spreading HIV/STI information online, among Chinese MSM in order to describe their social-behavioral characteristics, including sexual behaviors and HIV/syphilis testing.…”
