“…The prevalence of HIV positivity in people with SMI is generally higher than in the general population, but varies substantially (1.3–23.9%) 347,348,349,350,351,352,353,354,355,356,357,358,359,360,361,362,363,364,365,366,367,368,369,370. The high frequency of substance abuse, sexual risk behaviors (e.g., sex without a condom, trading sex for money and drugs), and a reduced knowledge about HIV‐related issues contribute to this high HIV prevalence 364,371,372,373,374,375,376. Therefore, it is important that patients with SMI are tested for HIV 377.…”

“…To date, a handful of studies evaluate or compare lay understanding (knowledge, beliefs or attitudes) of HIV and HCV in the general population or in at‐risk communities (injection drug users, for example). These studies suggest that the public has variable understanding of these infections and that beliefs tend to be more concordant with the biomedical model for HIV than for HCV [14–21]. At present, we are not aware of studies that formally compare health beliefs about HIV and HCV in the United States using a theory‐based model of health beliefs.…”

“…The prevalence of unhealthy behaviors also extends to sexual activity, with more than 50% of Australian women with SMI reportedly not using condoms with casual sexual partners (Davidson et al., ). Recent reports also suggest the knowledge gap for people with SMI regarding human immunodeficiency virus risks and consequences is significant and there is an urgent need for education (Goldberg, Tapscott, Calmes, & Wolfe, ).…”
