“…This study supports previous findings that the VPS can be an effective strategy for helping students think in the moment, apply nursing knowledge, and assess their attitudes toward providing appropriate care to diverse patients. 22 The overall decrease in the human value subscale in the control group suggests that students in the treatment group that interacted with the virtual transgender patient and learned within the context of caring for a vulnerable patient were able to see the humanness of being transgender whereas students in the control group that did not interact with the virtual transgender patient in the context of a patient care setting drew conclusions about the value of transgender individuals as people solely from the facts learned in class.…”

“…21 Along with increasing knowledge, engaging with patients through VPS can positively impact attitudes. 22 VPS uses a web-based platform that allows nursing students to interact with patients in specific contexts that support practicing and applying nursing skills such as collecting subjective and objective data, documenting data in electronic health records, choosing appropriate interventions, and evaluating outcomes of care. Similar to gaming, scored feedback based on individual student performance provides measures of student understanding and competence.…”

“…The findings support previous work that screen-based virtual patient simulation scenarios can be effective teaching strategies for the application of knowledge 9 and can positively impact student attitudes toward patients. 10,11 Working through the assigned simulation scenario of a patient that had missed several hemodialysis treatments provided learners the opportunity to apply nursing knowledge and skills, and consider their attitudes related to caring for a patient that did not adhere to the plan of care, and now, presented in crisis. The change in mean scores from pre-to posttest suggests the screen-based virtual patient simulation improved learners' competence in addressing the patient's physical and psychological comfort and decreased caregiver biases.…”

“…Previous evidence in China has indicated that educational initiatives that assist nursing students in developing empathy [ 10 ], peer interventions combined with standardized patient training [ 11 ], and anti-AIDS discrimination training program [ 12 ], are essential to delivering patient-centered inclusive care to HIV patients. Internationally, studies have revealed that seminar and virtual patient simulation activity focusing on PLWHAs can positively impact nursing students' attitudes [ 13 , 14 ]. Although nursing education programs have made great efforts over the past decade, and the proportion of healthcare providers unwilling to take care of patients with AIDS has declined, nursing practitioners still feel fear and tend to keep a distance from PLWHAs [ 15 , 16 ].…”
