HIV, alcohol, and noninjection drug use

Abstract: Alcohol and noninjection drug use is prevalent in certain populations. There is a strong association between use of alcohol and noninjecting substances, including methamphetamines, amyl nitrates, cocaine, and other drugs, and HIV-infection risk. This underscores the need for a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy that addresses substance use, including screening and behavioral intervention, among those at risk.

“…Alcohol use was found to be associated with HIV incidence and prevalence in systematic reviews and meta‐analyses 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106. This association may have resulted, in part, from the causal impact of acute alcohol use on sexual decision‐making 107, resulting in condomless sex 105, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, 114.…”

“…Cocaine use disorder also increases risks for other health issues, including cigarette smoking, comorbid psychologic disorders, and acquiring and spreading sexually transmitted infections (Rounsaville et al, 1991;Budney et al, 1993;Van Tieu and Koblin, 2009). For example, after controlling for any history of injection drug use, the lifetime prevalence of HIV is more than 20-fold higher among current cocaine users relative to individuals not reporting current use (SAMHSA, 2014).…”
