HIV-1 subtypes and drug resistance mutations among female sex workers varied in different cities and regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract: BackgroundComplex mosaic structures of HIV-1 were found in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Currently, there is limited information on the circulating HIV-1 strains, the distribution of these strains and antiretroviral (ART) resistant viruses in different regions of the country, and the HIV-1 strains harbored by the high-risk groups like female sex workers (FSW) reported to be the source of recombinant and ART resistant viruses. MethodsDried Blood Spots (DBS), collected from 325 infected FSWs in ten cit… Show more

“…If the presence of M184I/V or K65R (DRM to NRTI) could prevent dolutegravir resistance as previously suggested [ 35 ], it should be explored further. As expected, the great diversity of HIV-1 variants in the country [ 36 ] is reflected in our study cohort, with a high rate of URF.…”

“…Our study reinforces the use of dried blood as a field-friendly, useful, convenient and alternative specimen type to whole blood or plasma in HIV molecular epidemiology surveillance studies in developing countries or settings with limitations as regards the collection, storing, transportation of plasma or when low blood volume is available 68 . Only 3 of 27 studies reporting variants in the DRC 48 , 50 , 51 had used DBS for HIV-1 variant characterization (Sup. Table 1 ).…”

“…In this sense, some authors suggest HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) availability and provision could be a potential incentive to improve retention among people attending HIV testing 60,61 . In the DRC the knowledge and access to the PrEP are still low today 61,62 , adherence to antiretrovirals is not high 63 and ARV resistance is present 64 . Therefore, it does not seem to be an option today in the country although it might be an option to be considered in the future for high risk population attending HIV testing.…”
