In the case of the former, the production and reactivity of capsular antibodies are compromised as a consequence of: i)depletion of CD154-expressing memory helper T cells of the Th1 and Th2 subtypes, which provide help to antibody producing B cells [39]; and ii) loss of antigenspecific memory B cells with advancing disease [3].
